Ukrainian business proposed to strengthen sanctions against the aggressor country and expel Russia from the UN Security Council

Ukrainian business and think tanks held another meeting with Michael McFaul, an American diplomat who served as US Ambassador to Russia in 2011-2014 and was Special Assistant to the President of the United States for National Security Affairs before being appointed Ambassador. Michael McFaul is currently a professor of political science at the Center for Democracy and the Rule of Law at Stanford University.

The meeting was organized with the support of CIPE Ukraine.

Members of the Ukrainian Business Council had the opportunity to ask the diplomat their questions regarding the effectiveness of the economic sanctions already imposed against Russia and to provide proposals for strengthening sanctions against the aggressor country.

The discussion was attended by Grigol Katamadze, President of the Association of Taxpayers of Ukraine, Yuriy Syvitsky, Chairman of the Software Ukraine Association, Nadiya Bedrychuk, Head of the Ukrainian Association of Direct Sales, Borys Emeldesh, President of the All-Ukrainian Professional Association of Entrepreneurs, and Svyatoslav Pavliuk, Executive Director of the Association “Energy Efficient Cities of Ukraine”. Svyatoslav Pavliuk, Partner at ASA Group Law Firm Maksym Koldoba, Senior Economist at CASE-Ukraine Volodymyr Dubrovsky, and other heads of business associations and think tanks.

One of the main topics of the meeting was the expulsion of Russia from the UN Security Council or the revocation of its veto. The business community announced several ways to resolve this issue. The UNSC members also emphasized the importance of putting Russia on the FATF blacklist. FATF. The International Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering suspended Russia’s membership, but did not add it to the list of high-risk countries.

The issue of imposing secondary sanctions to increase pressure on Russia and control over the seized assets, namely 12 AN-124-100 Ruslan aircraft, was actively discussed. At least 5 of them continue to fly within the country and abroad, except for the countries that have imposed anti-Russian sanctions. It is also extremely important to strengthen sanctions against the Russian aviation sector, in particular the sanctioning of Volga-Dnepr.

Another important topic was the restriction of Russian oil exports by improving the mechanisms for setting oil price ceilings and imposing sanctions on several insurance companies that insure violators of the price ceiling.

The meeting was held off the record. Michael McFaul took into account the proposals made by the business for further analysis.
